An iconic Top End scene… where warm morning light meets tropical green and still water.
The Top End is defined by its vast wetlands and floodplains, stretching from the outskirts of Darwin through to the Arnhem Land escarpment over 250 kilometres away. These life-giving waterways are fringed with pandanus, a distinctive, spiky, palm-like tree adapted to thrive in seasonally inundated landscapes.
Captured here at Corroboree in the early morning, the pandanus are illuminated by the warm glow of the rising sun, their forms reflected in the calm billabong below. Behind them stands a freshwater mangrove - another species well suited to these wetlands - while melaleuca (paperbark) communities are usually found nearby.
These floodplains are also rich with birdlife, making them a haven for wildlife and a dream for photographers - from the tall black-necked stork and powerful white-bellied sea eagles, down to flitting honeyeaters and bee eaters.
