Top End Framed by the Forest - Motor Car Falls, Kakadu National Park

Framed by the Forest - Motor Car Falls, Kakadu National Park

from A$175.00

Cloudy conditions created just the right atmosphere to photograph this mighty waterfall. The soft light was just right, enabling the colours of the cliffs to provide a splash of ochre through the scene of lush greenery and clear emerald water.

One of Kakadu’s best wet season waterfalls, Motor Car Falls is surrounded by lush tropical monsoon rainforest. This shady habitat is found in small pockets throughout Kakadu - hidden along creeks or in shady rocky outcrops. The vegetation is dense, lush and green. This makes Motor Car Falls a perfect place to relax during the humid wet season days, with pristine swimming and rushing water, and flat rocky ledges around the water’s edge.

These trees frame the scene perfectly, the edge of the forest leading to freshwater.

Motor Car Falls is located in the southern region of Kakadu National Park, a part of the Yirmikmik Walks. The walk in to the falls is 3km (each way), mostly along a formed old vehicle track (hence the waterfall’s name). The final part of the walk veers toward the escarpment edge, away from the easy terrain and in to the shade of the forest. The final part of the walk is a short scramble over boulders, next to the creek. A winding trail through the shady forest feels like a world away from the open heat along the vehicle track.
