Exploring off track in Kakadu is not for the faint-hearted. While much of the park is made up of vast woodlands and floodplains, the eastern region rises into the rugged formations of the Arnhem Land escarpment - a landscape of stone: towering cliffs, hidden gorges, and ancient stone.
This is one of my favourite places to walk. Rock overhangs and caves offer shelter to both wildlife and stories, with traces of generations past quietly embedded in the land. There’s a presence here - something deeply grounding and humbling.
During the wet season, the landscape transforms. Water moves freely through the stone country, forming cascades and pools where the dry season leaves only rock. It’s a time of movement, energy, and renewal.
Camping out here brings a sense of anticipation each evening - whether the sky will settle into stillness or come alive with a Top End storm. On this night, distant lightning flickered as darkness fell.
Climbing carefully to a high point near camp, I set up on a narrow rock ledge overlooking the creek below. Using long exposures, I waited as the sky shifted and pulsed - hoping to capture a fleeting moment of connection between water and storm.
Lightning over Kakadu is never guaranteed, which makes moments like this all the more special.
