Stingray Flight (Limited Edition - Vivid Territory Collection, "Ocean Blue" Series)

from A$225.00

The NT is not typically known for beautiful ocean landscapes. The Territory is known for rugged, outback landscapes - red and ochre, gorges and waterfalls. When we think about beautiful ocean landscapes in Australia, the mind typically jumps to places like the Whitsundays, Bondi Beach or maybe Broome’s Cable Beach.

The Northern Territory has 5500km of coastline, from the Gulf of Carpenteria in the east to the Joseph Bonaparte Gulf in the west. We’ve got the famous NT red cliffs and diverse mangrove habitats, but we do have plenty of coastline with that tropical paradise feel!

I’ve put together three “ocean blue” aerial photographs to showcase this part of the NT.. From the shore this beauty can be hard to see: in the wet season months water can be murky, brown and choppy. The real threat of crocodiles and deadly jellyfish prevent much of the connection with the ocean that the southern parts of the country experience.

The ocean perspective is completely different from the air. Captured on a 3.5 hour scenic flight from Darwin, I was drawn to the this isolated shape in the water and captured it from many angles. This composition shows the reef above the sandbar, and the sand “wings” on each side of the main “island” remind me of a stingray flying effortless through the water.

The NT coastline is a vibrant canvas, with patterns and shapes from every angle. To capture the shots in this series, a little planning is involved! Timing is important to creating images such as these around the Top End, as we experience such a huge tidal swing (8m). An outgoing low tide is best to reveal more land, and outgoing is great for capturing any water movement over reefs or rocks. The dry season is great for this kind of shoot, with consistent shooting conditions - clear midday skies provide the most well lit aerials when shooting top-down.

As a summary,

Rolled Fine Art Prints are pretty much what they say on the tin! A high quality, archive photographic paper which arrives rolled in a tube for you to frame in your desired frame type.

Canvas prints arrive ready to hang and are stretched around a wooden frame with a mirror wrapped edge.

Aluminium prints also arrive ready to hang with a "shadow mount" on the reverse. These are high definition, waterproof and scratch resistant.

Custom sizing by request.

Framing also by request. I handmake all of my own frames, but due to shipping challenges I prefer to keep these for a local pick up option. I can package and ship frames, but the cost will need to be organised on a case by case basis. I also often bring in different frames to try regularly so please get in touch if you'd like to see some current frame choices. Otherwise, please come and see them for yourself at the Waterfront Gallery!
